Two-time World Rally Champion Kalle Rovanperä has confirmed he is feeling “recharged” and ready to make a full-time comeback to the World Rally Championship in 2025 after an eventful part-time season exploring other motorsport disciplines, as reported by Motorsport.com. Widely regarded as one of the most gifted talents in the sport’s history, Rovanperä’s rapid rise through the WRC ranks has been nothing short of remarkable.
Hailing from a motorsport legacy – his father Harri Rovanperä was a WRC rally winner – Kalle entered the rallying world at a young age, developing his skills on the snowy and gravel roads of Finland. He made headlines when he debuted in the WRC2 class just days after turning 17, breaking age records and setting a new standard for young drivers in the championship. His fearless driving style, coupled with a calm maturity beyond his years, quickly earned him a place in the Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT lineup. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rovanperä clinched his first WRC title in 2022, becoming the youngest driver ever to win a world championship at just 22 years old. His impressive consistency, combined with his ability to extract the maximum performance from the car in any condition, propelled him to a second consecutive title in 2023. His dominance on the gravel, snow, and tarmac stages established him as a force to be reckoned with, cementing his status as one of the sport’s brightest stars.
In 2024, Rovanperä made the surprising decision to scale back his WRC commitments, opting for a part-time schedule. The Finnish sensation cited a desire to recharge and explore other motorsport avenues while temporarily stepping away from the rigours of a full-time championship campaign. However, he remained a pivotal part of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s efforts, showcasing his adaptability and precision driving by securing four wins out of his seven WRC appearances, including impressive victories in Kenya, Poland, Latvia, and Chile—already surpassing his tally from his 2023 title-winning season.
Despite stepping away from the full-time WRC schedule, the 24-year-old continued to sharpen his competitive edge. He diversified his motorsport portfolio by dabbling in drifting – a passion he has long embraced – and took on a new challenge in circuit racing. Competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux series, Rovanperä’s transition from rally stages to circuit tarmac was seamless, yielding wins at Imola and the Red Bull Ring. These ventures not only showcased his incredible versatility but also reinforced his reputation as one of the most talented all-round drivers in modern motorsport.

Now, as the 2024 season draws to a close, Rovanperä is eager to return to rallying full-time in 2025, ready to reclaim his dominance at the wheel of the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1. Speaking to Motorsport.com at Monza, where he made a guest appearance in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italy, Rovanperä expressed his enthusiasm and determination to tackle the expanded 14-round 2025 WRC season head-on.
“I think my batteries have recharged, yes,” said Rovanperä. “I’m ready to come back and race a full season, even though it will be longer and harder.”
While Rovanperä is thrilled to commit to a full season with Toyota in the WRC, he hinted that he hasn’t entirely ruled out further adventures on the circuit in the future.
“As far as plans for 2025 are concerned, I will definitely do the whole season with Toyota in the WRC,” he added. “After that, I don’t know yet about a possible track program, but I would certainly still like to race on the track.”
Rovanperä’s return couldn’t come at a better time for Toyota. His win at the recent Rally Chile Bio Bío has given the team a significant boost in the manufacturers’ title race, reducing Hyundai’s lead to just 17 points with two rounds remaining. Even with a part-time schedule, Rovanperä has remained a vital asset for the team, consistently delivering top-notch performances.
Although he won’t be competing in the upcoming Central European Rally (17-20 October), the penultimate round of the season, Toyota will field a strong lineup with Elfyn Evans, Takamoto Katsuta, Sébastien Ogier, and rising star Sami Pajari. Rovanperä, however, isn’t quite done for the year—he’s set to participate in the Killarney Historic Rally in Ireland on 30 November, where he’ll swap his championship-winning GR Yaris Rally1 for a nimble, rear-wheel-drive Toyota Starlet. This special appearance is just another testament to his deep love for rallying and willingness to embrace all aspects of the sport.
With his batteries fully charged and a fierce hunger to compete, Rovanperä’s full-time return promises an electrifying 2025 season for WRC fans. If his past performances are any indication, rally enthusiasts can expect more breathtaking moments as he looks to add more chapters to his already illustrious rallying career.
