The Guru Nanak Rally stands as a cornerstone of the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC), boasting a rich history as one of the longest-running and most prestigious events in the calendar. This year, the event takes on even greater significance as the Sikh Union Nairobi-organized Guru Nanak Equator Rally doubles as the season-closing round for both the KNRC and the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC).

Scheduled to take place in Machakos and Nairobi counties over the weekend of November 29 to December 1, the rally promises a spectacular showcase of motorsport prowess.
An event defined by unpredictability
As anticipation builds, the iconic rally faces an additional challenge this year: the unpredictable wet weather in Nairobi and its surrounding areas. Should the heavens open during the race weekend, drivers will be forced to balance grip on wet terrain with the demands of Kenya’s tough dry gravel roads.
Shrewd tyre selection will be pivotal. The ability to adapt to frequently changing conditions and “read” the terrain could make the difference between victory and defeat.
The countdown to action
The Guru Nanak Equator Rally kicks off on Thursday, November 28, with scrutineering at the Sikh Union Club starting at 9:00 AM. This process ensures that all vehicles meet technical and safety standards before they tackle the demanding course.
On Friday, November 29, rally fans will gather for the ceremonial start at the Sikh Union Club from 11:00 AM. This vibrant event provides a chance for spectators to meet the drivers, snap selfies, and collect autographs before the competition begins.
The day’s action moves to the Kasarani WRC Super Special Stage (SSS), where free practice and qualifying will take place. The qualifying stage will determine the ARC starting order for the top five drivers, setting the tone for the weekend’s fierce competition. A shakedown session follows in the afternoon, giving teams a final opportunity to fine-tune their machines.
Spectator stages and the Power Stage finale
The rally action heats up on Saturday, November 30, with Spectator Stages 1 and 2 (2.50 km each) scheduled for 10:33 AM and 12:37 PM, respectively. Fans can look forward to high-speed thrills and dramatic moments as drivers push their cars to the limit.
Sunday’s action begins with Spectator Stage 3 at 9:33 AM, leading up to the highly anticipated Power Stage (SS9). Spanning 14.94 km, this stage will serve as the rally’s grand finale and is set to thrill both fans and competitors alike. The Power Stage also offers valuable championship points, adding extra pressure for the crews.
A stage for African rally excellence
As part of the FIA African Rally Championship, the Guru Nanak Rally reflects the ARC’s legacy of showcasing Africa’s challenging yet stunning rally landscapes. Since its launch in 1981, the ARC has played a crucial role in promoting motorsport across the continent.
Boosted by Kenya’s return to the FIA World Rally Championship in 2021, the ARC has regained prominence in recent years. However, financial considerations have trimmed the 2024 ARC calendar to six rounds from seven in 2023.
The entry list for this year’s Guru Nanak Rally features top talent, including reigning Kenyan champion Jasmeet Chana (nicknamed “Iceman”), reigning African champion Karan Patel, and KNRC series leader Samman Vohra. Ugandan drivers Yasin Nasser (Ford Fiesta R5/Subaru GVB), Mike Mukula (Subaru N14), and Didas Matsiko (Subaru N14) will also add to the competitive field.
A roll of honour
The Guru Nanak Rally’s illustrious history includes legendary drivers such as Ian Duncan, who holds a record 12 wins at the event. His achievements underscore the rally’s status as a true test of skill, endurance, and strategy.
