Kris Meeke has rejoined Toyota, set to compete in this year’s Portuguese rally series behind the wheel of a GR Yaris Rally2.
The announcement of Meeke’s transition from Hyundai to Toyota was made during a press conference in Portugal on Monday. Meeke is scheduled to test the car just before the first event of the season, the Rali Serras de Fafe, which takes place on March 7-8. Scottish co-driver Stuart Loudon will partner with Meeke for this season’s rallies.
Speaking to DirtFish, the five-time WRC event winner expressed his enthusiasm: “At this point in my career, to still secure opportunities like this, driving a top-tier rally car in what’s arguably the best national series globally, is incredible. I owe a lot to Ze Pedro Fontes, the owner of Sports&You, who manages the team. He’s the mastermind behind orchestrating everything.”
When asked about the switch from Hyundai to Toyota, Meeke explained: “Both brands are part of the Caetano Group, so for me, it’s essentially a change of the car and the suit. I’ve driven the Hyundai for a year and a half, and now it’s time for something new.”
Meeke described how unexpected circumstances led to this new chapter: “This opportunity arose under unfortunate conditions following Craig Breen’s accident. Initially, I was unsure about returning to competition, but once I did, I realized how much I loved it. I’m like a one-trick pony; racing is what I know best.”
Meeke, enthusiastic about his continued passion for rallying, added, “To still be able to do what I love at this stage of my career feels fantastic. We’re talking about high-level competition here: excellent cars, a superb team, and wonderful fans and rallies. The first four events of the championship are all on gravel, with the fourth being Rally Portugal, and the others taking place on tracks that have been part of the World Championship.”
Having dominated five of the eight Portuguese rounds last season, Meeke holds the series in high regard. “Is this the best national championship in the world? It’s hard to think of a better one. Today’s press conference had extensive coverage by the national media and television stations. The organizers really understand how to do things right—they have the genuine passion and commitment needed to support and promote rallying.”
