Former Icelandic rally champion Daniel Siguardson leads Rally Reykjavik after the opening day of action, having powered his Subaru Impreza N8 into a 32 second lead after four high speed stages around the host city. Welsh interloper Mick Jones is fifth overall in his two wheel drive Ford Escort MkII.
It was not all plain sailing for Siguardson as he lost the clutch on the startline of the opening 28 kilometre stage! Despite this he still battled through thick fog to record a time 29 seconds faster than his nearest competitor! His closest rival was fellow Subaru pilot Jon Bjarni Hrolfsson but the current pace setter in the Icelandic Rally Championship would suffer a high speed crash in the very next stage, ending his event.
Welsh rallying enthusiast “Mad” Mick Jones lived up to his name as he hustled his Honda S2000 powered Ford Escort through that second stage second fastest overall and holds an overnight position of fifth position and is already 25 seconds ahead of the next two wheel drive.
Day two consists of a further 12 special stages, totalling over 160 kilometres, including the drivers favourite Kaldidalur suour, a high speed 40 kilometre test which the crews tackle three times! Saturday 14 August, the third and final day of action, is comprised of a further six stages before the ceremonial finish back in Reykjavik mid afternoon.
