Motoring enthusiasts who have never participated in a regularity rally before have a chance to experience the least expensive form of motor sport in the MG Winter Rally in Gauteng on July 18.

The event is a round of the South African Regularity Rally Association’s Firestone Legendary Drives series and also incorporates a round of the TOTAL Blind Navigators Rally Championship. It is open to all members of registered car clubs and, as a special incentive to non-members, the organisers have included a novice class to encourage and develop interest in ‘on-road rallying’ among motoring enthusiasts who have never participated in a rally before.

A 180-km route on quiet roads will take competitors from the start/finish point at Nooitgedacht’s Ball and All golf driving range (off the R114) to Magaliesburg and back with a visit to the Cradle of Mankind and a refreshment break along the way. The first car is due off at 10h30 and the last car is expected back at Nooitgedacht at around 15h30.

It is often said that Regularity Rallying, which means driving as a team, and not being a second early or late, on a pre-determined route is the ‘most legal fun you can have on public roads’!

There will be a braai and prize-giving afterwards, where competitors will be able to relax and compare notes with fellow enthusiasts.

Regularity rallying is modelled on the rallies of earlier times where a driver and navigator needed to keep their rally car on the route and on time. It is a sport of precision and accuracy, rather than an all-out quest for speed like modern special stage rallying.

SARRA events cater for all types of car from classic ‘golden oldies’ to the most modern. Regularity rallying is ideal for the family, with the driver and navigator equally responsible for the outcome, and it’s also the easiest and least costly way to enter motor sport.
