Gergo Szabo became the fifth different driver in 10 years to win the Sibiu Rally IRC Supporter Event when he triumphed on the gravel contest in Romania last weekend.
Driving a Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancer E9, the Hungarian beat Romania’s Valentin Porcisteanu by almost 2m40s. Titi Aur took third to make it an all-Lancer podium.

Afterwards, Szabo said: “I am happy because I didn’t have any technical problem or anything else. I drove quite careful, taking into consideration the length of the rally. I think I could have driven faster, but I really didn’t want to take any risks.”

Event organiser Sorin Itu added: “It was a spectacular rally and I think we managed to obtain very important points in our attempts to make the Sibiu Rally an international event. The IRC Supporter Event status we had has made our name better known in Europe and I am sure that the next year we’ll have many foreign drivers at the start line.”

Of the 35 starters, 23 crews reached the finish of the event, which covered 147.3 kilometres over 10 special stages. The rally was based in Sibiu, the 2007 European Capital of Culture, and was a round of the Romanian national championship.
