It was a bitterly disappointing weekend of lost opportunities for the Basil Read/bizhub Ford Rally Team in the Eastern Cape when Charl Wilken and Greg Godrich were forced to retire after completing the first stage of the Osram Rally, round 6 of the Sasol SA Rally Championship…
As the S2000 Ford Fiesta rounded the first ‘left eight’ corner, the crew found “the rock of Gibraltar” in the middle of the road. Godrich explains: “Charl couldn’t do anything to avoid the rock which had been pulled into the road by a previous car”.
We were extremely careful through the rest of the stage and when we got to the end, we found oil leaking from a broken gearbox oil cooler”. We had no option but to withdraw”, Godrich lamented.
“I was really looking forward to the day and some seat time, which is now another lost opportunity for the team. I’m particularly sorry for our loyal sponsors and hard working team, who deserve a good result”, said a disappointed Charl.
The next outing for the Basil Read/bizhub Ford Rally Team is the Swartland Rally in the Western Cape on 17 and 18 September.
