The Retirement Fund Solutions Racing Team aims to end the 2010 Absa Off Road Car Championship on a high note this weekend in the RFS-sponsored Magalies 400 in Gauteng.
Hannes Grobler and Hennie ter Stege are second overall in the Production Vehicle championship in the RFS BMW X3 diesel and, although they can tie the current leaders Chris Visser and Japie Badenhorst in the RFS-supported Toyota Hilux (provided they win and Visser fails to score), Visser and Badenhorst have already wrapped up the driver and co-driver titles because they have more wins to their credit.
“We will be going all out for our second win of the season (after the Toyota 1000 Desert Race),” said Grobler. “We want to make sure of second place in the championship and, because of anomalies in the scoring system, we are still in contention to win the SP class.
“Another win and second place in the championship will mean a lot to the team,” said the multiple champion. “It has been a great team achievement to develop a brand new race car from scratch and we are all very happy to have done so well in our first season.”
Christiaan du Plooy and Henk Janse van Vuuren have come on strongly towards the end of the season in the RFS Toyota Hilux and have their tails up after a fine third place on the recent Human Auto 400 in the Free State. This has improved their championship position to seventh overall and another strong performance on Saturday could see them finish in the top five for the season.
Entering under the banner of the Pretoria-based RFS team this weekend will be the Toyota Hiluxes of class D championship leaders Deon Venter and Ian Palmer and class E title contenders Pikkie Labuschagne and Rikus Erasmus. Venter and Palmer lead defending class D champions Dewald van Breda and Johann du Toit (Toyota Hilux) by nine points. Nine points is also the gap that separates Labuschagne and Erasmus from class E championship leaders Lance Woolridge and Ward Huxtable (Ford Ranger).
