From 24-26 October, the Criterium des Cévennes promises high drama as the 2024 French Rally Championship (CFR) enters its decisive phase. The rally, famed for its challenging routes and intense night stages, is set to be a battleground for top drivers and an important chapter in the CFR season. With 141 teams ready to compete across various categories, the rally will feature the CFR Team, 2-Wheel Drive Championship, Michelin Trophy, Women’s Championship, GT2i CFR FFSA Trophy, and the Clio Trophy France.
Key battles to watch
1. Title showdown between Rossel and Bonato
All eyes are on the heated duel between Léo Rossel and Yoann Bonato. Rossel, the rally’s local favourite, arrives fresh off a commanding victory at Rallye Cœur de France, where he extended his lead in the drivers’ championship by ten points. A win in his home event could secure him the championship title. However, Yoann Bonato, who shares the record for most wins at Cévennes with rally legend Bernard Béguin (six victories), is determined to use his experience to close the gap. Eric Camilli is also expected to play a pivotal role, acting as a wildcard in the battle for the podium.
Additionally, a fierce competition brews among rising talents like Lucas Darmezin, Réhane Gany, and Sarah Rumeau. Local heroes, including Yannick Vivens (5th in 2023) and Dorian Nicolas, are eager to make their mark on their home turf.
2. Final dance for the Clio Trophy France 2024
Arthur Pelamourgues, poised to secure the Clio Trophy title, needs only to start the rally to claim his crown. However, with 28 teams competing, the battle within the Renault-backed series will be anything but simple. The contest for the teams’ title remains open, with Fun Meca Sport, David Automobiles, PH Sport, and Sébastien Loeb Racing all still in contention.
3. Michelin Trophy: Familiar faces and new contenders
Thomas Capelli remains in a prime position to win the Michelin Trophy’s Amateur category. However, regular competitors like Ludovic Jeudy and Patrick Benne are hot on his heels. Meanwhile, Pablo Sarrazin, who has impressed in recent events with a Rally2 car, returns behind the wheel of a 208 Rally4, ready to challenge for top honours. The Premium category will also see a much-anticipated return from Thomas Chauffray, competing in a Clio Rally3 after a long injury hiatus. Chauffray will face tough opposition from Cédric Robert and Jean-François Mourgues, piloting their Alpine A110 RGT machines.
The Cévennes challenge
As one of the most revered events on the CFR calendar, the Criterium des Cévennes is known for pushing competitors to their limits. This year, the rally will again feature a signature night stage to conclude the first leg, followed by a gruelling 46.40 km special stage on the second day.
