The 64th edition of the Rallye International du Valais (RIV), held from October 24-26, promises to be nothing short of spectacular. With a near-record number of entries, an elite lineup in the Rally2 category, and a 70% revamped route, the 2024 edition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.

Record-breaking participation and top-quality competitors

With 116 crews registered, this year’s event is just shy of the all-time record of 118 participants, set in 2002 and 2007. But it’s not just about the quantity—this year’s rally boasts an impressive field, ensuring fierce competition.

One of the most notable entries is Jos Verstappen, former Formula 1 driver and father of reigning World Champion Max Verstappen. Verstappen will tackle the Swiss roads alongside his co-driver Renaud Jamoul. “Jos the Boss” will make his debut on these challenging stages, joining a strong lineup of international competitors.

Adding to the star-studded field, Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis will pilot a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2. Known for his exploits in the Mitropa Rally Cup—a European series spanning six countries—the prince will compete in a record-breaking Rally2 category, featuring 26 entries, the highest ever for the Valais classic.

International and national showdowns

This year’s rally also draws 23 international teams, a participation level reminiscent of the event’s days as part of the European Rally Championship. But beyond the international presence, the Rallye International du Valais serves as the final round of the 2024 Swiss Rally Championship.

The national title will be fiercely contested between Michael Burri/Gaetan Aubry and Mike Coppens/Christophe Roux, who are separated by just one point heading into the finale.

Adding to the intrigue, reigning RIV champion Jonathan Hirschi, now partnered with Mélanie Tendille, returns with ambitions to defend his crown and leave an even greater mark on the event.

A redesigned route with new challenges

The 2024 edition features a 70% revamped route, including 50 kilometers of new stages, forcing competitors to adapt quickly to unfamiliar terrain. The rally spans 12 special stages, kicking off with a showcase of 20 historic cars—a nostalgic prelude to the main event.

This year’s rally will also include a regularity rally, now featuring both modern and classic vehicles. 13 teams will compete on the same stages as the main competitors, running after the 85 modern entries.

Spectator zones and local engagement

To enhance the spectator experience, local clubs, restaurants, and businesses have teamed up to create vibrant public zones along the route. Six secure public areas, complete with food stands and entertainment, will be available throughout the rally. Fans can find detailed information, including the dynamic route map, full schedule, and entry list, on the official website: www.riv.ch

An unmissable event

With a star-studded field, tight championship battles, and a revamped route, the 64th Rallye International du Valais promises to be an unforgettable event.
